High-speed photography/video needs lighting levels that are much higher than normal photography.  Users should understand that the lighting intensity of continuous lighting (flood or spot lights) is measured by the lumen rating of each lamp and combined with the efficiency rating of its reflector.  The wattage rating for a given lamp, is not a measure of lamp performance, it is only a measure of power consumption.  For example, there are many different lighting fixtures that use 1,000 watt lamps, but the output efficiency of these lamps will vary by 100% or more.  Selecting the correct lighting fixture for a specific high-speed application assures that: (1) the available light will be focused on the subject to be photographed and not on areas outside the camera's field-of-view. (2) Maximum lighting efficiency will be produced from the amount of electrical power consumed.

Adherence To The Above Guidelines will:

1. Reduce the quantity of lighting fixtures for a given job.
2. Reduce power consumption.
3. Lower ambient temperature in the test area.
4. Lower the cost of lights and power.

The following are typical off-the-shelf continuous lighting fixtures that are recommended for both large and small area illumination requirements.  An LED stroboscope is included for synchronized pulse lighting for high-speed video applications.

ProCan III Short: Uses PAR-64 sealed beam 1,000 watt tungsten-halogen lamps with four interchangeable beam angles from very narrow spot to wide-flood.  Available with 120 VAC or 230 volt lamps.

Source Four PAR: A new generation tungsten-halogen fixture using a 575 watt lamp and an innovative reflector design with interchangeable lenses for very-narrow spot to wide-flood beam angles. Produces about 90% illumination level of the PAR-64 at 60% power consumption.  Available with 120 or 230/240 volt lamps.

Pallite VIII: A ring light using eight (8) ELH 300 watt tungsten-halogen projection lamps at 120 VAC. Designed for high-intensity close up applications.  Can be mounted with the camera lens in the center of the ring for shadow less lighting in a confined area. Supplied with dual cooling fans.

Mini-Cool: Small fixture using one 300 watt ELH tungsten-halogen  120 volt lamp.  Designed for lighting small areas in inaccessible locations. Flexible mounting and other accessories are available.

VideoStrobes: Are a Hyge and specialized white LED light source designed to illuminate small areas with high levels of stroboscopic illumination.  These short pulses of light are synchronized with high speed color and monochrome cameras.  A camera sync signal triggers the videoscope to flash once each frame at speeds up to 4,000 frames-per-second.  The exposure intensity remains the same on each video frame and at all camera speeds. The flash duration is adjustable from 10 to 500 micro-seconds per flash.  These short pulses of light freeze the motion of fast moving objects and result in blur-free video images that are clear and sharp in continuous playback or stop and single frame modes.
